Obective

The objective of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band is to provide the highest quality musical experience through performance of exceptional literature.

History

The Lawrence University Conservatory of Music has had only three Director of Bands in the last half century (Fred Schroeder, 1951-1978; Robert Levy, 1979-2004 and Andrew Mast 2004-present) and has consistently maintained superior performance standards. Holding a prominent position in the creation and promotion of new music, superior performance of standard works and exploration of chamber repertoire, this balance remains a priority for current members of the ensemble.

Expectations for professionals

Attendance and Grading

Students should be in place, warmed up and prepared for all rehearsals. Conflicts with classes meeting immediately before rehearsals should be addressed with that instructor. All absences or conflicts should be communicated to Mr. Mast as soon as possible.
Tardies will given to students not seated, warmed up and prepared for the tuning note for a particular rehearsal or piece.
When a student is absent or late for a rehearsal for any reason, he/she should complete an absence form available on the bands web page and on the band board. Completion of this form helps both student and conductor to be accountable for the results of missing rehearsals.
When missing any portion of a rehearsal for reasons other than illness or emergency, that rehearsal should be listened to on iTunesU and a brief report (one or two paragraphs of critique including specific comments about your section as well as the entire ensemble) emailed or given to Mr. Mast.
Absences will be excused for illnesses requiring medical attention or family emergencies. Absences may be excused for other reasons at the discretion of the conductor and excused absences will not count against the grade.
Unexcused absences will result in the reduction by one letter grade. Two unexcused tardies will have the same effect as one unexcused absence.

Repertoire

Rehearsal schedule

Weekly rehearsal schedules will be posted on the WE/SB board (behind the Con office), on the bulletin board by the jazz room and on the web site.

Rehearsal recording Most rehearsals will be recorded and put on the iTunesU web site at: https://viking.lawrence.edu/itunesu/

Music

Every student is issued a folder and individual parts for outside preparation and practice. Failure to care for and return music on time will result in a withheld or lowered grade. Music needing to be copied should be tacked to the WE/SB board.

Section Leaders

While the personnel for the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will be rotating on each concert, a section leader will be appointed for all sections. Section leaders should communicate with the conductor about any issues or concerns related to their section. Sectionals can and should be called whenever necessary, giving players in the section adequate time to adjust their schedules.

Concert attire
Concert black will be worn for all performances. Men should obtain tuxedos with white tuxedo shirts and black bow ties. Reduced rates may be obtained from The Formal Event (2415 N Richmond St., 730-8321) Women should wear black dresses or pant outfits. Tops should not be sleeveless or spaghetti-strapped, dresses should be at least tea-length. Flip-flops are not acceptable footwear for concerts.
