Student Solo Concerto Competition

Each Fall students audition before a faculty committee with a finalist to perform as soloist with the Wind Ensemble in the spring.

LAWRENCE WIND ENSEMBLE
CONCERTO COMPETITION

Guidelines
Offered annually by the Wind Ensemble based on concert availability.
Competition auditions to take place Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 1-4.
Open to any student enrolled in applied music study at Lawrence University who has been nominated in writing by their studio teacher approximately one week prior to audition date.
Solo applicants must memorize repertoire, and singers must prepare a minimum of fifteen minutes of music, not necessarily a single work.
Competitors are not disqualified from competing in future Wind Ensemble Concerto Competitions, but winners may not enter a future competition by the Wind Ensemble.
The committee will consist of no fewer than 3 and no more than 7 judges. Some or all of the judges may be selected from the Lawrence Conservatory faculty who do not have students auditioning for the LSO competition in the same year.
Auditions will be a maximum of 15 minutes in length. The student participant may organize their own audition excerpts that best represent their overall performance within the 15 minute audition limit. The audition must include excerpts from every movement in the Concerto or every section in the one movement work . All cadenzas should be performed. The faculty judges will not interrupt the students predetermined 15 minute audition presentation.
Competitors must provide their own accompanist and their own copy of the score for the judges .
Accompanists and their schedules are the responsibility of the student.
Judges have the right not to pick a winner.
Winner is to perform with the Wind Ensemble on a season concert selected in advance of the competition (May 22, 2009).
It is the responsibility of the applicant to consult with the wind ensemble conductor if your concerto selection requires unusual instrumentation. A transcription for Wind Ensemble or Band must be available if the work is not originally scored for winds.
