LAWRENCE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERTO COMPETITION
• The Lawrence Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition is open to any student enrolled in applied music study at Lawrence University who has been nominated in writing by their studio teacher.
• Students may enter the competition with a complete concerto, a single movement from a concerto, or a similar solo piece with orchestral accompaniment. Works for more than one solo instrument are also accepted. Students must enter the competition only with one work. Each entree should be at least 10 minutes long, with no limitations on the maximum length. Voice students, if needed, may enter the competition with several works totaling the required minimum length. Students need approval from the department chair and the Director or Orchestras before entering the competition.
• The competition consists of a preliminary and final round. Each applied department (strings, keyboard/guitar, voice, winds, brass/percussion) will organize their own individual preliminary round. There will be a maximum of 2 candidates from each applied department in the final, a total of 10 finalists.
• The final round will take place on Saturday, January 11th, 2014, from 2.00pm to 6.00pm in the Memorial Chapel. Each applied department will submit the list of finalists no later than 5.00pm on Friday, January 10th, 2014. The final round will be open to the public.
• The jury for the final round of the competition will consist of three judges from outside Lawrence University.
• The final round will be a performance of the complete work (no exceptions). Long orchestral tutti sections should be cut in the final. The final round will be open to the public.
• Winners from previous LSO Concerto Competitions will need to wait one year before entering the competition again.
• Competitors must provide their own accompanist.
• Finalists must provide three copies of the score for the judges.
• A maximum of two winners may be selected. Judges have the right to select no winner.
• Winners will be featured in the LSO Concerto Competition Concert, together with the winner of the LSO Composition Award on Sunday, March 9th, 2014 at 8.00pm in the Memorial Chapel. The dress rehearsal will be from 10.00am to 1.00pm on the same day of the performance.
