Fall 2007 Auditions for Concert Choir, Cantala (Women’s Choir), Viking Chorale and Jazz Singers

All auditions are approximately 10 minutes in length and will consist of elements listed below. All students may audition for any ensemble.

Upon your arrival at school, please sign up for an audition time. Sign-up sheets will be located at the Conservatory orientation help desk in the Conservatory Shattuck lobby. Time slots will be available on a first come/first serve basis. (Your assistance in auditioning early in the week will be appreciated.)

Audition times for new students: Monday, September 24, 2007

JAZZ SINGER AUDITIONS:
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2007. Room SH 46.
3:10-4:20 pm: NEW & INCOMING (freshmen and transfers) STUDENTS.

Audition Procedures for Concert Choir/Women’s Choir (MUEN 275/272):

1. Prepare the following excerpts. Versions downloadable with Adobe Acrobat can be found at the end of this list.

Singet dem Herrn (excerpt) – J.S. Bach: prepare one voice part of your choosing
Sleep (excerpt) – Eric Whitacre: prepare any two vocal parts of your choosing
How Can I Keep From Singing – Robert Lowry: As you will notice, we have purposely removed all musical markings from this excerpt. We would like you to demonstrate your interpretive and musical intuition and creativity by including crescendos, decrescendos, dynamics and articulations as you deem appropriate for the performance of this piece.

2. Be prepared to sight read and vocalize throughout your range.

3. Testing of rhythmic and tonal recall abilities.

How Can I Keep From Singing?

Audition Procedures for Lawrence Chorale (MUEN 270):

1. Introductory choral experience open to all students.

2. Prepare a short solo of your choice for correct voice placement in the ensemble.

Audition Procedures for Jazz Singers (MUEN 215):

Prepare any two parts appropriate to your range on the excerpt, Wave. (Be able to sing your part alone and while others are singing other parts.)
Prepare a memorized jazz solo (your choice) that shows your abilities as a performer.
Be prepared to scat over a 12-bar Blues progression in the key of B flat.
Voice majors must clear their participation in this ensemble with their studio teacher.

CONCERT CHOIR begins with a retreat experience on Friday, September 28. All choir members selected for this ensemble are required to attend this annual Björklunden choir retreat:

Friday, September 28 th at 4:30 pm through Saturday, September 29th (back by midnight).

CANTALA rehearsals begin on Monday, October 1st at 3:10 pm in SHAT 163. Please note:

All members selected for Cantala are required to attend the annual Björklunden Retreat on Friday, October 5th beginning at 4:00 pm and continuing through 5:00 pm, Sunday, October 7th.

VIKING CHORALE will begin on Tuesday, October 2nd at 5:45 pm in CHAPEL.

JAZZ SINGERS will begin on Tuesday, October 2nd at 3:10 pm in SHAT 46 (the Jazz Room).

Required Choir Concert Attire

CONCERT CHOIR AND CANTALA WOMEN

Women participating in Concert Choir or Cantala will need to purchase the Odessa Top and Dmitra Skirt from Stage Accents. Their website is:

Following is the information you will need:

Top: Black Odessa Top, ¾ sleeve, order #8633

Stage Accents will accept check or money order but credit card is preferred. Please be very careful when determining the size to order since there will be a restocking fee for returns.

You will also need a pair of comfortable, black dress shoes, black undergarments and black nylons. Hem length is 1/2" off the floor with your dress shoes on.
