Matthew Michelic

Associate Professor of Music

Matthew Michelic enjoys a diverse musical career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and teacher. Mr. Michelic has been praised in the Denver Post as possessing ãan extraordinarily rich viola sound,ä and the Milwaukee Sentinel viewed his performance of Hindemith's Trauermusik as ãa touching, masterful interpretation.ä He has concertized throughout the United States and internationally as violist of the Kenwood, Da Vinci, and Delos Quartets, and has recorded on the Orion and CRI labels. In chamber music recitals, he has collaborated with such artists as Jose-Luis Garcia, Robert McDonald, Jeffrey Solow, and the Fine Arts Quartet. As an orchestral player, he has performed frequently with the Milwaukee Symphony and the Aspen Festival Orchestra, and has served as principal violist of the Green Bay Symphony and the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. Mr. Michelic frequently performs on broadcasts of Wisconsin Public Radio, as a recitalist, and as a member of the Lawrence Chamber Players. He performed at the 1994 International Viola Congress, the 1997 International Double Reed Society Conference, and in 2000 was a featured recitalist on WFMT in Chicago. His solo appearances with orchestra include performances of major works such as Harold in Italy, Flos Campi, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and the Frank Martin Ballade.

Mr. Michelic has studied at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh, England and the Institute for Advanced Musical Studies in Montreux, Switzerland. He holds degrees form the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Indiana University. His principal teachers include Bernard Zaslav and Mimi Zweig. He has performed in the master classes of Paul Doktor, Bruno Giuranna, and William Primrose and has received chamber music coachings from members of the Amadeus, Cleveland, Fine Arts, Guarneri, and Juilliard quartets.

Mr. Michelic has served as artist-in-residence at Colorado College, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and the University of Delaware. His summer activities have included teaching at the Indiana University String Academy and the International School for Musical Arts in Ontario, Canada. Currently Mr. Michelic is an Associate Professor of Music at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, where he teaches viola and chamber music.
