Joanne Metcalf

Assistant Professor of Music

Composer Joanne Metcalf joined the Lawrence Conservatory faculty in 2001. She holds the Ph.D. in Music Composition from Duke University, and among her many awards and prizes have been the Aaron Copland Award from the Copland Heritage Association in 2000, a Fulbright Fellowship for study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague in 1993, and first prize in 1993 from the International League of Women Composers. A great many eminent ensembles and other performers from around the world have commissioned works by Ms Metcalf, including the following in just the last two years: Ensemble Amarcord (Germany), the Ciompi Quartet (USA), John Potter (England), Nancy Zeltsman (USA), Electra (The Netherlands), Trio Medieval (Norway), and Ensemble Singer Pur (Germany). In 1997 Ms. Metcalf served as Composer-in-Residence at the Durham Magnet Center for the Arts in North Carolina. Her composition teachers have included Louis Andriessen, Scott Lindroth, and Stephen Jaffe.
