David Helvering

Instructor of Music

David Helvering is presently a Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory at the University of Iowa. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Arkansas State University and a Masters of Music in Music Theory from Sam Houston State University. While at Iowa, he received a university-wide teaching award, and in 2001, was the recipient of the Robert G. Olney Sound Research Travel Scholarship, which enabled him to study the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner at the Warner Bros. Archives. Mr. Helvering has given numerous papers and guest lectures on film music and is presently working on his dissertation, a study of the underscoring of dialogue in Hollywood narrative film.
