Tad Hardin

Fellow, vocal coach

Pianist Tad Hardin enjoys an active performance career as a chamber musician, soloist, and vocal coach. His recital engagements and master classes have taken him to venues throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, South America, and Europe, with recent debuts in London and Milan.

Singers and pianists who have studied in his studio have gone on to study at leading graduate schools and perform in numerous young artist programs.  Juggling a diverse performing and teaching schedule, Hardin is in demand as a coach, accompanist, and clinician, giving master classes for solo pianists, collaborative pianists, and singers.  His repertoire covers a broad range of art song, opera, oratorio, solo piano and 2-piano works, piano-percussion duos, and chamber literature for piano and strings.  His particular interest in early 20th-century music has prompted research and scholarly presentations on the songs of Charles Ives, Anton Webern, and the post-tonal implications of Claude Debussy’s later works.

Hardin has been privileged to study at the Mozarteum Akademie in Salzburg, the Cours International de Musique in Switzerland, and in the private studios of many distinguished artists and pedagogues including Martin Katz, Graham Johnson, David Allen Wehr, Carolyn Bridger, Tim Hoekman, Doug Fisher, and Karyl Louwenaar. Other influential mentors include Roger Vignoles, John Wustman, Dale Duesing, Phyllis Curtin, Sarah Walker, Denyce Graves, John Harbison, Norman Shetler, the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble, and the Penderecki String Quartet.

Hardin earned his Doctor of Music degree in piano performance at the Florida State University College of Music, where he also received a master’s degree in vocal coaching.  He is an active member of MTNA, NFMC, Classical Singer, and the College Music
Society, for which he serves on the Advisory Committee for Performance.

Dr. Hardin teaches on the faculty of the Lawrence University-Conservatory of Music in
Appleton, Wisconsin.  He also performs and teaches at summer festivals, which have included the Songfest Young Artist Program, the Festival Internacional Bach in Perú, and the Asolo Song Festival in Italy, where he is the Director of Collaborative Performance.
