Activity 1

Prepare your Lawrence Symphony Orchestra audition.  Here are the requirements for each instrument.

Activity 2

Activity 3

Print and prepare your part from the Mozart Divertimento in D major, K. 136. During Welcome Week, we will play this piece together.

Communicate with your studio teacher.  Send an email to your teacher from your Lawrence account and ask if there are additional items you should prepare over the summer.

Expectations of String Students

At Lawrence, your instrument is at the center of your academic life; you are responsible for your performances.  Your teacher is always there to help, our ultimate job is to teach you how to teach yourself.  You should expect to spend about 3 hours each day in the practice room. 
Come to lessons prepared with decisions on

  • Bowings
  • Fingerings
  • Phrasing
  • Tempo
  • Interpretation
  • Look up all foreign musical terms in the score.
  • Listen to various interpretations.
  • Compare various editions and choose fingerings and bowings that suit you best.
  • Analyze the piece you are learning and use your harmonic and formal analysis to inform your interpretation and assist in your memorization.
