The vocal styling of three-time Grammy nominee, Todd Buffa, is a unique blend of blues, jazz, romance, and rhythmic vibrancy. Before embarking on his solo career, Todd’s work with the vocal group “Rare Silk” elicited kudos from critics everywhere. Under his direction, Rare Silk’s first release had a remarkable showing: #1 Best New Vocal Group, #2 Best Vocal Group, #8 Best Jazz Album of the year (Downbeat) and #3 Best New Jazz Artist (Cashbox). In addition, all three of Rare Silk’s recordings reached the top 10 of Billboard’s Jazz charts. Todd has also been citied for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education (I.A.J.E.). Todd’s efforts in the genre are now recognized in the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.
He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and The Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as in Rome, Italy and Monte Carlo, Monaco. Todd has appeared on the same bill as Miles Davis, Branford and Wynton Marsalis, and Mel Torme, to name a few.
Todd taught vocal jazz at the University of Colorado at Denver and has taught voice privately for more than 20 years. He has done numerous clinics, master classes, and has adjudicated vocal jazz choirs at universities throughout the United States, most recently at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay in January ’08 and Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon in February ’08.
Todd is looking forward to the coming release of his first solo CD, “Curious Orchids,” and has begun work on a vocal methods book while he continues to perform.
