Instrumental Jazz Audition Procedures
All instrumentalists wishing to perform in big bands and/or small groups will audition privately in 10-minute audition slots. All except drummers will:
- Perform a prepared jazz solo (transcription, etude, head, jazz chart excerpt, etc.) of your choice (one minute maximum)
- Perform the head and improvise multiple choruses on one of the two works below (lead sheets in all keys and MP3 play-along recordings downloadable from this web site):
“As You Like It” (blues in Bb by Mark Urness)
“Boppy Head, N.C.” (blues in F by Lee Tomboulian)
- Sight-read 2-3 jazz charts in various styles and tempos
- DRUMMERS: In lieu of the above, drummers will perform a variety of styles (jazz swing, rock, Brazilian, Cuban) under the auspices of Prof. Richeson.

Personnel for all jazz groups will be posted Friday 9/18 .
