Local Heroes, Local Antiheroes: Exploring Appleton's Past

July 10-12, 2012

Exploring Appleton's Past

From native peoples and Appleton’s earliest settlers to some of the Fox Valley’s most famous residents, this interactive history lesson will take participants from the comfort of the classroom to a number of historical sites around the Fox Valley, offering a truly hands-on view of times past. The seminar will highlight three periods in history: Native Americans to early missionaries (late 1700s–early 1800s), The Progressive Era (1890–1920) and McCarthy’s Appleton (mid 1900s). Local experts will serve as your historical guides, as you visit such places as a historic Grignon trading post, Riverside Cemetery and Joe McCarthy’s old stomping grounds—just to name a few! These historical periods ushered in tremendous changes throughout the country, and the Fox River Valley was no exception.

Sessions will be held 8:45 a.m.–4 p.m. each day with a wine and cheese reception following the first day.

Sentimental Journeys: Classic Hollywood Films About Travel, Destinations and the Human Condition

July 17-19, 2012

Sentimental Journeys

Many American films of the Classical era use the metaphor of the journey to explore the development of key characters whose ideas and values undergo transformation along the route of travel. This seminar will look at several examples of this scenario across various film genres such as the mystery, the comedy, the western and the human interest story. It will address such questions as: What do these journeys tell viewers about the central characters, and about humans in general? Is it important that the destination actually be reached before the end of the feature? Which mode of transportation seems best suited to which type of classic tale, and why is the choice of vehicle important to us? What techniques do the best directors and screenwriters use to “bring us on board” and allow viewers to travel alongside the passengers? And, of course, participants will be asked the inevitable question: “Are we there yet?”

Sessions will be held 8:45 a.m.–4 p.m. each day with a wine and cheese reception following the first day.
