Vocal Music: Vocal Music of the Holocaust

This course will begin with a general history of NAZI suppression and its effect on artists, narrowing to music and then specifically to vocal music. Many works will be covered, but will focus on vocal works of composers of NAZI-labeled “Entartete Musik.” The course will cover compositions, artists, performances and performance situations, as well as repercussions, finally giving a post-WWII account of the music’s status and effect. It may also include live performances.

Instructor: Steven Spears, assistant professor of music, Lawrence University
