| RE: | World-Wide Web Steering Committee |
Dear Colleagues,
With the debut of Lawrence's new web site, the college now has two effective approaches to the World-Wide Web, each with distinct purposes and focusing, in some instances, on different audiences. I want to begin by thanking those of you who have worked on these projects, ones that I believe will serve and project Lawrence to great good effect,
At the same time, it seems clear that Lawrence will be best served by assuring that we have an integrated approach to this technology, one that will at once preserve and I distinguish the agenda ofthe two projects--CWIS and the new web site--but that will also help us achieve a coherent and consistent institutional identity and message.
Toward that end, I invite the recipients of this memo to serve on the World-Wide Web Steering Committee, which I've asked Steve Hirby to chair. The charge and task of this committee will be 1) to coordinate issues related to Lawrence's presence on the web; 2) to ensure that the college will take full and effective advantage of this opportunity to communicate with external audiences; and 3) to make Lawrence's distinctive collections and other educational resources available on the web--to audiences on-campus and off--and to apply the content and technology thereby afforded to support the curriculum and programs ofthe college.
As it is inevitable that policy issues relating to our on-line communications on the web will arise periodically, an important function ofthe steering committee will be to review such policy issues and make recommendations to me and the administrative staff about them.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience that you will accept this assignment. Thanks in advance for your willingness to do so and for your service to Lawrence on this committee.
