- Changes in information design
Steve Blodgett reported on a Web Working Group recommendation to make "two
minor changes in the navigation buttons to enhance site navigation. The
proposed changes seek to raise the visibility of the Conservatory of Music
pages that are under development and to provide easier access to the Athletics
pages."
After much discussion, and with one dissenting vote, the committee approved:
- Substituting "Conservatory of Music" for "Outreach & Community" on
the Lawrence homepage, and substituting "Music" for "Community" on lower-level
pages.
- Retitling the "News & Events" button on the homepage "News, Sports & Events."
Lower-level page "News" buttons would remain the same. Changing the news button
on the homepage also entails changing the "Academic Programs" button to
"Academics".
- Migration to NT Web server
Pete Gilbert reported on plans to move the website from the current VMS server to an NT
server running (probably) Microsoft's IIS. A testing version is available on
http://ralph.admin.lawrence.edu:8080/. Keep in mind that not all the "outlying"
directories are available in this test version.
- Managing access to "campus-only" materials
- Who decides what materials are to be restricted?
This discussion was postponed. Leah Drilias asked about FERPA restrictions on
posting minutes from LUCC meetings. Gilbert volunteered to call the Registrar
and find out more.
- Report from the Director of Instructional Technology
Pete Gilbert reported on the demise of the old /www/ portion of the website and
the unfortunate consequences attending thereto. Steve Hirby is working on
patching the /www/graphics/ problems and information about the Personal
Disclaimer fix can be found at /guide/disclaimfix.html.
- Report from the Director of Information Technology
Planning
Jim Evans reported the existence of a Information Technology Planning website
(http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/ITP/) which includes Y2K information.
Jim then distributed printouts of two emails, one describing a
CLAC initiative to hire
Keynote to performance test the
web sites of CLAC schools during the week of February 7 -14. Jim's other email
was a follow up memo from a workshop Jim attended in January on
Institutional Opportunities for Advanced Networking. Jim also has a CD-ROM version of the conference for
loan.
- Other business
Susan Dean asked if it was possible to identify "responsible parties" for each
section of the web site, and if it was possible to more systematically identify
and communicate new additions to the web site, in order to facilitate linking
to and fro.
