World Wide Web Steering Committee

February 3, 1998
Minutes

Present: Steve Blodgett, Steve Butts, Jim Evans, Pete Gilbert, Steve Hirby, Peter Peregrine, Nancy Truesdell

Progress on new Web design:

Blodgett reported that Ben is working "in fits and starts," due to a post- holiday system crash, but he's about to the stage where he can present additional designs for our perusal. We're hopeful that this will happen within the next couple of weeks.

We discussed what our timeline might be for rolling out the new web site. No conclusion was reached. "Soon" was preferred.

A lengthy and spirited discussion took place, reviewing many of the basic issues regarding the LU web. No conclusions were reached, but one outcome seemed to be that Hirby, Lowe, Gilbert and maybe Baird (fair game since he was not at the meeting) would constitute a "technical working group" to get a new server up and a directory structure in place.

Hirby brought us back to the agenda.

Student membership on Web Steering Committee:

Hirby reported (and Truesdell concurred) that the W3SC interim report to students had raised the question of why there is no student representation on the Steering Committee. There seemed to be no good reason why not, so Hirby will encourage the president to request nominations from the LUCC Committee on Committees and appoint a couple of students.

Personal Web pages for administrators:

Hirby reported on the technical considerations which have made it difficult for staff and administrators to have personal home pages. We agreed that it should be possible for them to have home pages and that we should encourage Computer Services to overcome these technical barriers.

Alternative HTTP servers?

There appears to be no move toward alternative servers at this time, although there may be in the future if VMS has to go the way of all operating systems.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, February 18, 3:00 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Pete Gilbert
