1. Progress on new Web design

Blodgett reported that we have come to an agreement with a freelance web designer for the graphic design of the new web site. Further discussion revealed that the designer is Ben Hirby, who did such a nice job on the Buerger catalog.

Discussion then turned to the inventory of current web holdings. Hirby had prepared an expanded version of the spreadsheet with additional columns for Source, Update rule, and Maintainer. He wondered whether to add an URL column as well.

There was a brief back-and-forth about whether the Maintainer was a "position rather than a person." We tended to think that the Source was a position, while the Maintainer would be a specific person.

After discussion with Dean, Hirby had added the outline of the Admissions sub- site, and had expanded the Academic Programs section to include most (if not all) of the departments and inter-* areas.

Much discussion ensued regarding academic programs: what we call them, how we describe them, from whence comes the text that describes them and in what style it should be written, whether that text is truer on paper or on the web, and how to get it all done without doing it multiple times in multiple versions.

There were no simple answers to be found. Alas.

It was agreed that Academic Programs would include links to:

The Faculty List referred to above should probably include profile info (degrees, interests) as well as contact info. Since the Primary Database doesn't include the profile info and the Course Catalog doesn't include contact info, some sort of hybrid list may need to be maintained. But only one hybrid list.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, November 5, 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Pete Gilbert
