World Wide Web Steering Committee

October 1, 1997
Minutes

Present: Dave Baird, Steve Blodgett, Steve Butts, Jim Evans, Pete Gilbert, Steve Hirby, Peter Peregrine, Nancy Truesdell

1. Progress on new Web design

Hirby reported that Public Affairs was looking for a web design company with which to contract for the new graphic look of the web site. No luck yet.

Hirby reported that he and Baird had met and begun an inventory of what we have currently available on the web, what needs work and what is missing. He distributed a spreadsheet including the layout of the new website; members of the committee were assigned to look at different sections and take copious notes on what needs to be done. The work already done by Kristen, Patrick and Frank is available at http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/testing/. See David for username and password.

Steve Butts suggested some "rules" which need to be defined:

We discussed whether it was time to try to make a case for a new "webmaster" position. Butts suggested the approach:
  1. Here's what we've done so far
  2. Here's what we want to do
  3. Here's how we think it can be done

Evans suggested an approach linked closely to the mission of the university and opined that we need "someone tuned to accuracy as well as pretty."

Hirby reported on a Web Week survey that indicated a backlash against the title "webmaster," with a more common model being that of a team. Hirby then proposed a Lawrence "Team Web," made up of:

Hirby reported that Lowe and Gilbert had met (briefly) to discuss the underlying directory structure of the new beast.

2. Student e-mail addresses

We tried to update each other on the status of the searchable e-mail directory and where we were as regards FERPA requirements, technical requirements, and the Year 2000 Problem.

Baird will follow up with Anne Norman and Jeanne Loehnis about the e-mail project.

3. Memo to faculty/staff

At our last meeting we discussed an informational memo to be sent out to faculty and staff concerning who we are (as a committee) and what we've been up to. Hirby agreed to think deeply on this matter. He continues to think deeply on this matter.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, October 15, 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully (and hastily) Submitted,
Pete Gilbert
