World Wide Web Steering Committee

August 28, 1997
Minutes

Present: Dave Baird, Steve Blodgett, Candice Bradley, Steve Butts, Pete Gilbert, Steve Hirby, Robert Lowe, Peter Peregrine, Nancy Truesdell

Baird reported on progress made by student worker Patrick Saunders. Patrick went through the sites and created a "todo list."

Gilbert and Baird agreed to coordinate web student workers during the school year.

Blodgett reported that the graphic redesign of the site is proceeding and we should have "ideas to look at" by mid-September -- "hopefully."

A possible monkey wrench is the advent of a redesign of Admissions materials, scheduled for the next year. The web look should tie into to the print look, so we may be in for more work come next summer.

Bradley asked how far down the "official" LU look would go. Would it, for example, extend to Departmental pages? No.

Truesdell reported that Student Affairs will be fully staffed soon and she'll be able to attend more of our meetings. This announcement was met with general approval.

Butts reiterated his suggestion of 6 December, that we invite Mike Corbett to (at least one of) our meetings.

Blodgett asked if the Committee should be more visible on campus; that is, should we send out a memo saying who we are and what we're doing? A report to the faculty at the first Faculty meeting of the year was also thought to be a good plan. Hirby will draft an informational memo and circulate it.

Various technical issues were discussed, including internet vs. intranet decisions, the indexing process, access protections, building the directory structure to maximize access while minimizing confusion, etc.

It was agreed that "documentation is good."

Next Meeting: Wednesday, October 1, 1:00 p.m.

Respectfully (and hastily) Submitted,

Pete Gilbert
