Web Steering Committee minutes
5 October 2004
3:00 p.m. in Library 401
In attendance: Ken Anselment, Steve Blodgett, Steve Hirby, Robert Lowe, Nancy Truesdell, and Pete Gilbert
- Introductions and Committee Membership
We greeted one another warmly. We discussed student and faculty membership of the committee. Pete will ask President Beck to appoint a student member.
- Meeting schedule
Pete will MeetingMaker the group to try to schedule a monthly meeting. We discussed the verbification of nouns.
- Departmental Web Sites
Pete reported on departmental web sites and how they're being maintained. In some cases, Pete hires students to maintain departmental sites; in other cases, the department hires a student or a faculty member maintains the site. Results vary widely. Pete has contacted department chairs to ask them to do (or contract for) annual site maintenace.
- Other web updates
We discussed a variety of web initiatives:
The Career Center job opportunities shows how information that exists in Banner (in this case, job listings) can be displayed in ordinary web pages. We agreed this was cool and discussed other possible applications.
Messrs. Brown and Blodgett do an annual pass through the web site to catch egregious errors and infelicities. We appreciate their work.
- Contribute
Pete reported that version 3 of Contribute (http://www.macromedia.com/software/contribute/) works with our templates and could be a good way for people to do quick edits and updates to web pages. He's still reviewing the product to make sure there aren't other gotchas.
- Voyager link
We have been encouraged to increase the visibility of Voyager by placing a link higher in the hierarchy. There is no obvious place to add such a link but we will continue to explore possibilities.
The meeting adjourned c. 4:10 pm.
