6 March 2003

Attending: Steve Blodgett, Steve Butts, Jim Evans, Peter Gilbert, Joe Gregg, Steve Hirby, Danielle Knight, Robert Lowe, Michael Thorp, Nancy Truesdell.

  1. Mr. Butts welcomed newly designated student member, Danielle Knight, intro-duced other members, and gave a brief overview of the committee's role in devel-oping institutional policy responding to specific issues, and currently "steering" a web-site conversion project.
  2. Mr. Hirby reported on the status and prospect of SCT Banner Web (web for ...) applications. Initially, the intent is to present read-only access to real-time data, first to students (spring) and then to faculty (summer). Additional functionality, where Banner data would be modified or where other audiences would be served, are farther down the road in the overall Banner rollout (e.g., alumni email? pass-word-protected pages?). Lawrence Voyager is the likely branding. Each user is to self-maintain a PIN with a security challenge question.
  3. The discussion included these suggestions: to have Voyager pop up in its own Window and, if possible, dismiss that window when Voyager exits; to have the display time out and go away; to check for proper cache expiry (a concern on shared machines); and to link to LDAP or another uniform source of authentica-tion data.
  4. Issues of special concern to this committee:
    1. where will links to it be established? a quick link on the front page? links from relevant audience views? maybe several such links?
    2. is there a personal confidentiality issue if the session ID might persist after the window is closed? We would want that fixed.
  5. Mr. Butts brought up the request for a direct link on the main page for intercolle-giate athletics. The president suggests that we accede to that request. While some were not especially eager, most saw wisdom in concurrence. After further discus-sion, it was left for Mr. Butts to draft and Mr. Blodgett to review a letter that would aim to define any quid pro quo commitments, though recognizing that the information in question is mostly a sports information function (Public Affairs).
  6. Mr. Hirby reported for the implementation subgroup (Blodgett, Gilbert, Hirby) for the new web site and distributed a two-page plan. Homework assignment:
    1. what if any tasks have been left out?
    2. who are the other people who could help out?
