Web Steering Committee Minutes
August 8, 2002
Attending: Steve Butts, Jim Evans, Michael Thorp, Steve Blodgett, Joe Gregg,
Peter Gilbert
After much discussion, those present came to a tentitive agreement on what the navigation’s conceptual structure should be at each level for all topics in the site. Mr. Blodgett was given the task of documenting this structure and will create examples to illustrate it. Very briefly and in highly abstract terms, the concept is to recognize the importance of sub-sites at whatever level and to make most of their standard, left-hand-column navigational elements local to them. This implies some sacrifice of global, site-wide navigation in that column other than a means to return to the relevant Level 1 page or to the home page.
This concept was provisionally adopted pending both further input from Netcasters that will incorporate their navigation research results and consultation with committee members not present at this meeting. Mr. Butts will contact Bambi directly upon her return from vacation and will press her for a detailed site map so we can see how her view of specific navigational needs for the site comports with our more general concept.
Under a second topic, Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Thorp seemed to come to a provisional agreement on a common format for a Level 1 page and lower level pages that would work both for the Library and for Admissions, and it is hoped for most of the other major topic areas as well. Mr. G will work with Mr. T on a mock-up of such page(s) for review by the committee and Admissions but will wait for Bambi’s input on the For Prospective Students vs. Admissions controversy before doing the work. Mr. Butts will press Bambi on this issue as well, and as he will be gone, will ask Mr. Hirby to act as Chair for the week of August 12-16.
