Departmental Web Pages

Pete Gilbert raised the question of the placement and function of Web pages for academic departments in the new site, indicating that he and Michael Thorp would be visiting with the department liaisons on May 29 and would like to be in a position to discuss this issue with them. After discussion, we reached consensus on the following points:

We support the notion that the standard departmental pages in the current site will in the new site be replaced with pages developed by and addressing the specific need of individual departments and programs

In such case, standards for appearance and minimum content will be developed and applied to those pages; these standards will be supported by a communication strategy

Because the department pages would thus become part of the LU core site, a method would be needed of providing pages by other means in those cases where departments or programs would decline to develop their own pages.

The appearance standards for department pages should be designed with both enough structure to ensure that the pages are recognizably part of the Lawrence core site and enough flexibility to support variation from department to department. We expressed the hope that the design templates to be received from NetCasters will support this notion of flexibility within structure.

Pete indicated that he will take this approach with him for discussion when he and Michael meet with the department liaisons on Wednesday, May 29.

Technology Advisory Committee

Steve Hirby reported on the existence of this committee. Discussion centered on whether its creation obviates the Web Steering Committee (no) and whether actions or recommendations by the Web steering Committee will have to flow through the Technology Advisory Committee on their way to Ad Staff (sometimes, depending on the issue).

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Hirby
