Web Steering Committee Minutes

February 21, 2002

Attending: Steve Butts, Jim Evans, Pete Gilbert, Steve Hirby, Joey Lawrance, Michael Thorp, Steve Blodgett, Joe Gregg

The Committee welcomed Prof. Joe Gregg to our company as the faculty representative for AY 2001-2002.

Mr. Butts reported that the signed contract had been sent to Nt and that the project plan and schedule as agreed upon last meeting was approved by them with minor changes.  The plan was passed out to members for review.  Mr. Butts was urged to maintain contact with the stakeholder groups and to keep them informed, and to explore with Nt how best and whether to take them up on their offer of speaking to interested groups on campus to help communicate what we are doing.

A short discussion of the “Reed College Problem” (unauthorized use of look-alike URLs)  broke out and Msrs. Blodgett and Gilbert were delegated to explore what LU should do in response.  Amid much derisory commentary on the current search facility, Mr. Gilbert offered to put up for testing an LU-specific Google search engine.  The larger issue of what search engine to have was deferred to the coming design process.

Mr. Butts urged the assembled to ponder the nature and dimension of a possible budget request from the Committee to be submitted to the campus budget process for next year.

Respectfully submitted,

Stephen Butts, Chair
