Minutes
25 April 2000

2:30 p.m., Sampson House Conference Room

In attendance:Steve Blodgett, Steve Butts, John Enters, Jim Evans, Steve Hirby, Robert Lowe, Michael Thorp, Nancy Truesdell, Pete Gilbert

  1. Webcasting WLFM
Continuing the discussion from the April 4 meeting, reports were made by Robert Lowe on technical issues, Pete Gilbert on licensing implications and cost, Steve Butts on relationships with Wisconsin Public Radio, and Steve Blodgett on programming and audience considerations. It was concluded that proceeding with Webcasting WLFM is a logical next step for the radio station in addition to being appropriately supportive of student initiative. The committee endorsed computer services' recommendation that we operate our own webcasting server rather than operating through a third-party service. Steve Hirby agreed to summarize the discussion and recommendation in a memo to Ad Staff.

  2. Advertising on The Lawrentian's dispatch mailing list.

  3. The Lawrentian is distributing the full text of the paper via email to a list of subscribers. They'd like to include advertising. There was some sentiment in favor of this proposal, but the prevailing view was that since commercial use of LU network and computing facilities is prohibited by policy, then the treatment of material distributed by email publication and by Web pages should be the same. The chair will convey this conclusion to Charles Schroeder, who forwarded the query from the staff of The Lawrentian.

  4. Redesign of www.lawrence.edu

  5. For lack of time, discussion on this topic was postponed until the next meeting.
