World Wide Web Steering Committee

Minutes
4 April 2000

2:30 p.m., Sampson House Faculty Resource Room

In attendance:Steve Butts, John Enters, Jim Evans, Steve Hirby, Robert Lowe, Nancy Truesdell, Pete Gilbert

  1. Proposed modification of the template
Gilbert reported on the history of the For Students page and his proposed "portalization." See: http://www.lawrence.edu/fac/gilbertp/newportal2.shtml The Web Working Group discussed it at their last meeting and approved its use, pending approval by the Student Affairs office. Gilbert discussed it with Truesdell who thought "it might be OK." After some editorial discussion, the committee approved the modification of the Standard Lawrence Template for this purpose. Truesdell will bring the concept to LUCC; Gilbert will make suggested changes.

  2. WLFM Webcasting

  3. Gilbert reported on communications received from Jim Daley, the WLFM manager. They wish to start "webcasting" local programming. WPR is already webcasting the Ideas Network; this would be an add-on. After much discussion, the committee assigned various tasks to various people: Lowe will explore technical and bandwidth issues, Gilbert will explore licensing issues, Butts will explore WPR issues, and Blodgett will be asked to explore desirability issues (is this something we actually want to do?). We'll report back at our next meeting.

  4. Campus Pipeline
Hirby reported on the status of Campus Pipeline. We have licensed the free version of Pipeline, but have no current plans to install it. See: http://www.campuspipeline.com for more info.

  5. The Next Generation
Lowe noted that recent articles have noted the importance of web sites for prospective students and that it may be time to redo our web presence. This will be on the agenda at the next W3SC meeting. In the meantime, committee members should ponder the best way to proceed.

Announcements

  1. Evans reported that he's on the ballot for another term on the WiscNet board.
