Requirements and Deadlines from the University Committee on Honors

To: The Faculty, all Seniors, Juniors
From: The University Committee on Honors
Subject: Honors in Independent Study

This memorandum is intended especially for seniors undertaking honors projects in the current academic year, juniors who may be considering doing honors projects next year, and faculty advisors. It contains essential information about requirements and deadlines for those intending to submit an honors project. Additional information about Honors in Independent Study and deadlines for this year may be found at the Honors Committee website at: http://www.lawrence.edu/committee/honors/.

The Honors Committee has two programs designed to assist students working on Honors projects.

  1. Roundtables:
The Committee will host informational roundtables for students currently writing Honors projects in the third week of each term at 4:30 pm in Mudd Library, room 401. All students working on Honors projects are strongly encouraged to attend. Juniors who may be interested in working on projects in the future are also welcome.
  2. On-line Summaries of Projects-in-Progress:
In order to increase the availability of information about Honors projects, the Committee posts brief descriptions of projects currently in progress on its website. Students who are working on Honors projects this year are asked to email to Prof. Powell (powella@lawrence.edu) a brief description of their project (100-200 words) at their earliest convenience. Posting a description of the project on the website does not in any way commit a student to completing a project. Please note also that this brief description does not take the place of the official statement of intent to file an Honors project. That statement of intent must still be submitted to Prof. Powell in paper at the start of the term in which you will be defending your project.

Guidelines and Deadlines for Honors in Independent Study

A student who expects to submit a project for honors in independent study must file a written statement of intent on a form that can be obtained from the Committee web site. The form must be signed by the student and the faculty member who will serve as the student's project advisor and submitted to the Chair of the Committee, Prof. Powell, in the Mudd Library, by 3 p.m. on the Friday of the first week of classes of the term in which the project will be defended. No project will be considered for honors in independent study unless this statement of intent is filed, though filing the statement does not obligate the student to submit a project.

Four copies of the final version of the project must be registered with Prof. Antoinette Powell in the Lawrence Library by 3 p.m. on the date listed below. These copies must be carefully proofread and free of typographical errors and misspellings, and all quotations and references should be checked for both accuracy and proper format. The copies will be promptly returned to the student for distribution to the members of the examining committee and the representative of the Committee on Honors. Please keep in mind that each of these members must receive a copy at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled oral examination.

Following the oral examination and no later than 3 p.m. on the last day of classes, a good clean copy of the project must be submitted to Prof. Powell for the Library collection. The written portion of the project must be bound in a two-hole hard cover and must otherwise conform to a style and format that is acceptable and standard in the discipline of the study. (Three ring binders, commercial binding, and plastic-fingered binding are unacceptable.)

The Committee on Honors will grant an extension on these deadlines only for causes beyond the student's control and upon receipt of a written petition endorsed by the project advisor. Inquiries about extensions should be directed to the Chair of the Committee, Prof. Powell, well in advance of the deadlines. The Committee strongly urges advisors to keep their students conscious of the importance of each of the deadlines.

Four copies of the project, the final library copy of the project and all other forms, statements, and reports must be submitted to Antoinette Powell, Chair of the Honors Committee, in the Mudd Library.
