Blake Johnson took the reins of the Lawrence University women's program in 2005.
Johnson took over a struggling men's team in 2000 and led the Vikings to consecutive appearances in the Midwest Conference Tournament in 2003, 2004, and 2005. He has a record of 50-71-11 at Lawrence and an overall coaching mark of 84-83-11. He has compiled a record of 14-28-3 in three seasons as the women's coach at Lawrence.
Johnson came to Lawrence in 2000 from Mount Senario College, where he was the head men's soccer coach and an instructor in Spanish for two years. Johnson compiled a 34-12 record at Mount Senario and won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles in 1998 and '99. Mount Senario also won the Region 3 championship in 1999, earning a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Johnson was the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and NAIA Region 3 Coach of the Year in 1999.
Johnson also brings a diverse background to Lawrence. Born in Ohio, Johnson bounced around both North and South America as a child. His father's work took the family to Central America and Uruguay, where Johnson lived for more than nine years and developed his love for soccer.
Johnson's family moved to Pewaukee, Wis., in 1972, and he later graduated from Pewaukee High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin and played soccer there before moving to Chile to work for the YMCA. Upon his return to the United States, Johnson finished his undergraduate work at Springfield (Mass.) College and graduated in 1984 with a degree in health fitness. He earned his master's degree in education from Springfield in 1993.
He then taught and coached soccer at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, for seven years and later was the assistant women's coach at Bates College and associate head men's soccer coach at the University of Maine-Farmington.
Johnson and his wife, Tami, have three children, Gabriela, Marlena, and Eleanora.
