MATCH RESULTS

NCAA Division III Championships in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (March 1-2, 2002)
Lawrence's Andy Kazik wins the national championship at 184 pounds. Kazik, the No. 1 seed, defeated Ricky Crone (35-2) of Augsburg College 4-2 in the title match Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period in which Kazik was the aggressor, the senior from Lawrence chose down in the second period. Kazik scored a reversal with about a minute remaining in the second period to go up 2-0. Crone got an escape just a few seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1. Kazik scored the match's only takedown with 35 seconds left in the second period to grab a 4-1 lead.

Kazik gave up an escape to Crone with 1:20 left in the third period, but that would be the final points of the match.

Kazik, who finished with season with a 40-0 record, is the first national wrestling champion in Lawrence history and the third individual national champion in school history. Diana Ling won a national title in track and field and Michael Gatner won a fencing title.

Kazik defeated Paul Cleary (25-5) of Loras College 3-1 in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Crone advanced to the title match by defeated Sonny Alvarez (22-10) of Wartburg College in the other semifinal.

Kazik advanced to the championship semifinals on the opening day of the championships. Kazik defeated Wes Koteski of Washington and Jefferson 14-4 in his opening-round match on Friday morning. Kazik then defeated Ben Dusina (28-8) of Ohio Northern 7-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday evening.

NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional at North Central College (February 23, 2002)
Andy Kazik, the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, won the title in his weight class and was Lawrence's lone qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Lawrence finished sixth in the team standings with 72 points and Pacific University won the regional title with 128.5.

Kazik pinned Chad Krnac of Augustana in 2:46 in the quarterfinals in his opening match. He then defeated David Hirt of Wheaton 3-1 in the semfinals. Kazik captured the title by beating Ryan Jones of Pacific 4-3 in the championship match. Kazik is now 36-0 on the season.

At 125 pounds, Andy Quinlan went 0-2.

Nick Morphew wrestled to fifth place at 133, posting a 3-2 record on the day. Morphew defeated Mike Novelli of Augustana 14-2 in the fifth-place match.

Aaron Guigar was forced to pull out of the tournament by illness so Lawrence did not have a wrestler at 141 pounds.

At 149, Randy Mitty had a 1-2 record.

Ric Scannell finished second at 157 pounds and had a 3-1 record. Scannell pinned Eric Raatz of MSOE in 3:56 in the first round. He then defeated North Central's Matt Janosek 3-0 in the quarterfinals and beat Nate Lukanich of the University of Chicago 5-3 in the semifinals. Troy Hall of Pacific pinned Scannell in 1:06 in the championship match.

Greg Goska finished with a 1-2 record at 165.

Adam Nickel finished fifth at 174 wth a 3-2 record. Nickel lost his opening match 13-3 to Shamar Bailey of Maranatha Baptist. Nickel dropped to the consolation bracket and defeated Andy Witkowski of Concordia University of Wisconsin 4-2. He beat Jesse Beecraft of Elmhurst 5-0 before losing to Bailey again 5-3. Nickel then won by medical forfeit over Peter Zafros of the University of Chicago in the fifth-place match.

Justin Seaman grabbed third place at 197 pounds with a 3-1 record. Seaman beat Sean Barnes of the University of Chicago 3-1 in the quarterfinals before falling to Pacific's Titus Folden 10-1 in the semifinals. Seaman then defeated Aaron Grannell of Augustana 2-1 and beat Sean Barnes of the University of Chicago 4-3 for third place.

Mark Schmoll finished 1-2 at heavyweight.

Wheaton College Invitational (February 1-2, 2002)
Lawrence finished tenth in the 24-team meet with 54 points. Embry Riddle won the team title with 157 points.

Andy Kazik led the Vikings by winning the championship at 184 pounds. Kazik defeated William McCleve of Embry Riddle 3-1 in the championship match and went 4-0 on the day. Kazik started with a pin of Paul Sorenson of Manchester in 4:04. He then defeated David Hirt of Wheaton 9-3 in the quarterfinals and beat Ben Dusina of Ohio Northern 6-4 in the semifinals.

Lawrence had two other wrestlers place in the top eight in their weight classes. Justin Seaman placed fourth at 197 pounds, and Nick Morphew was eighth at 133. Seaman was beaten 6-4 by Wayne James of Lindenwood in the third-place match, and Tyler Moran of Embry Riddle pinned Morphew in 4:37 in the seventh-place match.

Wisconsin Private Colleges Championships at Maranatha Baptist Bible College (January 19, 2002)
Lawrence rolled to the team title with 110.5 points. North Central College was second with 69.5.

The Vikings had three individual champions - Andy Kazik at 184 pounds, Ric Scannell at 157, and Andy Quinlan at 125. Lawrence had a wrestler place in the top three in every weight class. Other finishers for Lawrence were: Nick Morphew (third, 133), Aaron Guigar (third, 141), Randy Mitty (second, 149), Greg Goska (second, 165), Adam Nickel (third, 174), Justin Seaman (second, 197), and Scott Fischer (second, heavyweight).

North Central College Invitational (January 11, 2002)
Lawrence placed second in the 22-team tournament. Coe College won the title with 192 points, and the Vikings were second with 118.

Andy Kazik led Lawrence by winning the title at 184 pounds. Kazik defeated David Hirt of Wheaton College 7-3 in the title match. Lawrence's Nick Morphew placed second at 133 pounds after he was pinned by Coe's Adam Hutchinson in 3:17 in the championship match.

Ric Scannell placed seventh for the Vikings at 157 pounds when he pinned Brandt of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 5:34 in the seventh-place match. Greg Goska took fifth at 165, winning the fifth-place match on a medical forfeit over Raul Velaquez of Millikin College. Justin Seaman took fourth at 197 after dropping a 5-3 decision to Matt Huset of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the third-place match. Mike Mitty took seventh at 197 after beating Josey Lawson of Wilmington College 8-0.

Citrus Open at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (December 31, 2001)

Lawrence took second place in the 19-team tournament and Andy Kazik won the championship at 184 pounds. John Carroll won the title with 121.5 points, and the Vikings were second with 83.5

Kazik won the title at 184 by going 4-0 to improve his record to 17-0. Justin Seaman went 3-1 and took second at 197, and Scott Fischer also was 3-1 and placed second at heavyweight. Nick Morphew went 5-1 and took third place at 133, and Greg Goska was 3-2 to take fourth place at 165.

Other records for Lawrence's starters were: Paul Nickolaus, 0-2 at 125; Aaron Guigar, 0-2 at 141; Ric Scannell, 1-2 at 149; Dan Adamski, 1-2 at 149; and Adam Nickel, 0-2 at 174.

In the "B" tournament, which was cut short to due time contraints, Randy Mitty, Mike Mitty, and Jamie Howard led Lawrence. Lawrence's Andy Kazik captured the championship at 184 pounds. Kazik pounded Coe's Jesse Schadt 12-5 in the title match. Ric Scannell placed third at 157 pounds with a 4-0 win over Brandon Harwell of Harper. Mark Schmoll placed fourth at 197 pounds after falling to Coe's Brad Wheelan 3-2 in the third-place match. Paul Nickolaus was sixth at 125 pounds after Wartburg's Heath Ropp pinned him in 35 seconds in the fifth-place match.

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Golden Eagle Invitational (November 10, 2001)
Lawrence's Andy Kazik, wrestling at 184 pounds, took first in the prestigious Gold Division of the tournament. Kazik, ranked No. 1 in his weight class in Division III, took Most Valuable Wrestler honors and pushed his record to 5-0 on the season.
