APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball program will host a pair of girls' basketball camps this summer.
A Fundamentals Camp is set for June 22-25 and an Offensive Skills Camp is set for July 13-16. All camps are at Alexander Gymnasium, which is located at 1100 E. South River St.
The Fundamentals Camp will be broken down into three age groups and gives players the tools they need to become better players.
The camp for players in grades two through four will focus on developing ball handling skills, proper shooting techniques, and learning the rules of the game. The cost of this camp, which will run from 8:45-10:15 a.m. each day, is $50. The Fundamentals Camp for players in grades five and six will teach position specific skills. Post moves, perimeter skills, and defensive fundamentals will be taught to all. This camp, which runs from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day, is $60. The Fundamentals Camp for players in grades seven through 12 will run from 1:30-3:30 p.m. each day and costs $60. In this camp, fundamental skills will be integrated with team skills. Conditioning also will be addressed, showing players ways to improve speed and endurance.
The Offensive Skills Camp is opens to players in grades seven through 12, and the cost is $60. The camp, which runs from 10:00 a.m.-noon each day, will focus on shooting and breaks down the many aspects of being a better offensive player. Areas that will be emphasized include: post and perimeter moves, screening, movement without the ball, footwork, and effecitve ball handling.
All campers receive a camp t-shirt, and prizes will be awarded for various camp contests (free throws, 3-point shooting, ball handling, etc.).
The camp director is Lawrence head coach Marcus Heidorf, who took over the Vikings' program last season. Past and present Lawrence players will help demonstrate and teach during each session.
