Vikings fall to Lakeland in tourney semifinals

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- The Lakeland College women's basketball team jumped out to a huge lead in the first half and went on to a 66-49 nonconference victory in Friday's semifinals of the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament.

America McClure had a big game on the glass for the Vikings (0-2) as she pulled down 23 rebounds. That is the third-highest game total in Lawrence history, eclipsed only by Carol Arnosti's 26 vs. Silver Lake College in 1981 and Robin Chapman's 25 vs. Silver Lake in 1983.

McClure added seven points, five steals and a block to go with the 23 rebounds. Laura Aerts paced the Vikings with a game-high 12 points. Chelsea Coenen led Lakeland (2-0) with 10 points.

Lakeland led 19-10 after Aerts' jumper with 8:34 left in the first half, but the Muskies outscored Lawrence 23-10 to take a 42-20 at halftime. Nine players, led by Leah Eisner's eight points, scored in the first half for Lakeland.

The Muskies would go on to lead by as many as 30 points at 63-33 with 8:42 left before Lawrence rallied. The Vikings limited Lakeland to a free throw and a layup over the final eight-plus minutes as Lawrence finished the game on a 16-3 run.

The Vikings will take on UW-Superior in the consolation game on Saturday. Lakeland faces North Park University in the title game.
