Vikings edged by Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Beloit College women's basketball team scored the game's final seven points to rally for a 63-59 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Flood Arena.

Faith Jones scored 16 points to pace Beloit (10-13, 8-8 MWC). Katie Condon was 6-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line to finish with 16 points for the Vikings (3-19, 0-15).

Laura Aerts and Katie Van Es added 14 points apiece for Lawrence.

The Vikings led 59-56 on Van Es' layup with 1:44 left, but the Bucs missed a shot, grabbed the offense rebound and Diana Sopkowicz was fouled with 1:12 remaining. She hit both free throws to cut the lead to 59-58.

After Kanesha Walker missed a layup, Sopkowicz converted a conventional three-point play with 41 seconds left to put Beloit up 61-59.

The Vikings turned the ball over with 27 seconds left and were forced to foul. Sarah Stariha converted two free throws with 17 seconds left to seal the victory for Beloit.

Lawrence jumped out to an early lead as the Vikings hit six of their first eight shots from the field. Lawrence led 17-9 with 14:01 left in the first half and would go on to hold a 34-26 lead at the break.

Lawrence shot 59.1 percent (13-22) from the floor in the first half and finished at 55.8 percent (24-43) for the game. Lawrence's 25 turnovers were the difference as Beloit turned the ball over only 14 times.

Beloit scored the first nine points of the second half to grab a 35-34 edge. The teams swapped the lead several times and the game was tied at 48-48 with 6:26 left. Lawrence went on a 9-4 run at that point to build a 57-52 lead before Beloit rallied.
