Alverno rallies past Vikings in season opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Alverno College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes and went on to post a 75-63 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

Lisa Sorgi and Shataya McComb scored 14 points apiece to lead five Alverno players in double figures. Katie Condon came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points to pace Lawrence (0-1). Kanesha Walker added 12 points in her Lawrence debut, and Laura Aerts had 11 points and Cathy Kaye had 10.

Alverno (1-0) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Vikings trimmed that lead to 31-25 at the break by scoring the final six points of the half.

Lawrence then took its first lead of the game with a run midway through the second half. The Vikings outscored the Inferno 18-1 to grab a 52-42 lead with 10:03 left in the contest. The Vikings hit seven consecutive shots from the floor in that stretch, with Becca Anderson, Aerts, Kaye and Condon all connecting on 3-pointers.

Alverno came right back, and it took the Inferno less than three minutes to retake the lead. Alverno went on a 12-0 run to take a 54-52 lead with 6:55 remaining. Walker stopped the skid for Lawrence with a jumper that tied the game at 54-54 with 6:38 remaining.

The Inferno then put the game away in the final four minutes. After a pair of Condon free throws cut the lead to 62-58 with 3:36 left, Alverno went on an 11-0 run over the next 1:30 to take a 73-58 lead and seal the win.

Lawrence returns to action this weekend when it plays in the Lakeland Tournament.
