Big second half leads Monmouth past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Monmouth College women's basketball team pulled away early in the second half and went on to a 75-55 Midwest Conference win at Lawrence University on Saturday.

Tanesha Hughes posted a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds to pace Monmouth (9-6, 4-4 MWC). Melissa Gorski added 15 points, and Justine Boone had 13. Laura Aerts tied her career-high with 20 points for Lawrence (0-15, 0-8), and Erin Henzi added 15.

The Vikings were down by double digits less than five minutes into the game, but Lawrence battled back in the first half. Monmouth was up 15-2 with five minutes gone, but Lawrence chipped away at the lead.

Over the next 6:32, Lawrence outscored the Scots 15-7 to cut the lead to 22-17 on Aerts' jumper with 8:22 left in the opening half. The Vikings got as close as three points three imes in the final 2:36 of the half before Monmouth pulled ahead 36-29 at the break.

After Henzi opened the second half with a layup for Lawrence to cut the lead to 36-31, Monmouth went on a 22-7 run over the next seven minutes. The Scots led 58-38 after Boone hit a 3-pointer with 12:52 left in the game.

Monmouth would go on to lead by as many as 24 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Ripon College.
