APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team missed a 3-pointer at the end of regulation that would have won it and missed another in the final seconds of overtime that would have tied it, and Knox College held on for a 66-63 Midwest Conference victory Friday at Alexander Gymnasium.
Erin Henzi paced Lawrence (0-5, 0-1 MWC) with 18 points, Laura Aerts and Katie Van Es added 11 points apiece. America McClure also was in double figures for the Vikings with 10 points. Erin Navolio led Knox (1-2, 1-0) and all scorers with 30 points.
Lawrence trailed by as many as nine points in the second half, but the Vikings slowly chipped away at the lead. Lawrence was still down five at 53-48 with 3:56 left in regulation, but the Vikings rallied to tie the game at 56-56 on McClure's layup with 39 seconds left.
Krystyna Williams missed a jumper with 25 seconds left, and McClure grabbed the rebound to give Lawrence a chance to win it. Aerts had her 3-pointer at the buzzer blocked by Lynn Mueller to force overtime.
The Prairie Fire jumped out to a 62-57 lead early in overtime, but the Vikings battled back again. McClure hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 62-61 with 2:00 left, and Navolio countered with a pair of free throws with 1:07 left.
The Vikings missed a pair of shots and were forced to foul. Abby Owens made one foul shot with 30 seconds left for a 65-61 lead, but Aerts was fouled and countered with two free throws with 21 ticks remaining to cut the lead to 65-63.
Owens made another free throw with 20 seconds left to put Knox up 66-63, but the Vikings had one last shot to tie it. Aerts missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left, but Van Es grabbed the rebound. She handed it back off to Aerts, but she couldn't get another 3-point try off before the buzzer sounded.
