Carroll pulls away in second half to rout Lawrence

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Carroll University women's basketball team broke open a close game midway through the second half and rolled to a 78-47 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Van Male Fieldhouse.

Erin Henzi paced Lawrence (0-17, 0-10 MWC) and all scorers with 18 points. Laura Aerts added 17 points for the Vikings, and Katie Van Es had a career-high 13 rebounds..

Karen Hoewisch led four Carroll players in double figures with 13 points. Leah Lemke, Janelle Groer, and Melissa Haug added 12 points apiece for the Pioneers (13-5, 8-3).

The Pioneer led 33-23 at the break, but the Vikings were hanging with Carroll early in the second half. Van Es' layup with 15:14 left cut Carroll's lead to 37-30.

Carroll followed that with a 20-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to grab a 57-32 lead with 8:54 remaining. Groer scored six points in that stretch and Hoewisch added five.

Carroll would go on to lead by as many as 31 points in the final minute.

The Vikings return to action on Tuesday when they travel to St. Norbert College.
