APPLETON, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College women's basketball team scored the first 11 points of the game and went on to post a 68-52 Midwest Conference victory at Lawrence University on Wednesday.
Lawrence senior Carrie Van Groll, playing in her last home game, scored 17 points to pace the Vikings (4-18, 1-14 MWC). Rachel Hermus paced first-place St. Norbert (19-4, 15-1) with 19 points, and Morgan Strasser added 12.
Joining Van Groll in their final home game were seniors Jenny Stoner, Stephanie Kramer, and Kelly Mulcahy, who didn't play due to injury.
St. Norbert jumped out to an 11-0 edge in the first 4:44, and Lawrence finally got on the board with Caresse Reiland's layup with 14:56 left in the first half. That was the last time St. Norbert's lead would be in single digits.
The Green Knights led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but Lawrence cut the lead to 11 four different times in the first half and trailed 39-24 at the break.
Lawrence opened the second half with an 8-2 run, with Laura Aerts scoring four points, to cut the lead to 43-32 with 17:30 left. The Green Knights responded by scoring the game's next six points, and Lawrence never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Lawrence wraps up its season Saturday when it plays at Carroll College.
