SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A big second-half rally came up short, as San Diego Christian College held on for a 70-62 nonconference win Monday night over the Lawrence University women's basketball team.
Lawrence (3-5) trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half before cutting the lead to five in the final minutes.
Caresse Reiland scored a career-high 25 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds to pace Lawrence. Reiland's previous career-best was 21 points against Lake Forest College in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals last season. Carrie Van Groll added 19 points for the Vikings, who played without starters Jenny Stoner and Kelly Mulcahy.
Dorcella James scored 22 points and Vernessa Roberts added 18 to pace San Diego Christian (2-7).
The game was tied 7-7 when the Hawks went on a 17-1 run to take command. Lawrence trailed 38-21 at the break and was down 43-21 before it starting clawing its way back.
The Vikings went on a 14-4 run, with Van Groll scoring five points and Reiland four, to cut the lead to 47-35 with 11:34 remaining. The Hawks got the lead back to 15 points when Reiland and Van Groll took over.
Over a seven-minute stretch, the Vikings trimmed 10 points off the Hawks' lead. Van Groll scored 10 points and Reiland added nine, as Lawrence went on a 21-11 run to cut the advantage to 64-59 with 1:21 left.
The Hawks then hit six consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Lawrence plays again Tuesday when it travels to Point Loma Nazarene.
