MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to 0-2 in Midwest Conference play with a 75-70 overtime loss at Monmouth College on Saturday.
Kelly Mulcahy paced four Vikings (2-3, 0-2 MWC) in double figures with 22 points. Carrie Van Groll had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Jenny Stoner added 13 points. Caresse Reiland had 10 points and nine rebounds. Katie Sheets paced Monmouth (3-2, 1-1) with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Lawrence jumped on the Scots early and built a 37-19 lead late in the first half. Monmouth scored the final eight points of half and whittled the lead down to a more moderate 10 points at 37-27 at the break.
The Vikings led by as many as 12 points early in the second half, but the Scots went on a 16-4 run to tie the game at 46-46 with 9:52 left in the second half.
The Scots led by five points with 2:16 left in regulation, but Lawrence scored the next five points to tie it at 63-63. Lynsey Barnard's jumper gave Monmouth back the lead, but Van Groll's jumper with six seconds left forced the overtime.
The contest was tied 67-67 in overtime, but the Scots scored the next four points to take control. Monmouth connected on 4 of 6 free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the win. Lawrence was ice cold from the field in the overtime, hitting only 2 of 10 shots.
Lawrence returns to action Friday when it hosts Finlandia University.
