Lake Forest holds off Lawrence

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team saw its rally come up short Friday night, as No. 20 Lake Forest College held on for a 65-59 win over the Vikings in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams.

Jenny Stoner scored a game-high 21 points to pace Lawrence (2-2, 0-1 MWC). Caresse Reiland added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Kelly Mulcahy had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Lisa Nassin led Lake Forest (6-0, 1-0) with 18 points, and Eileen Walsh and Beth Lucas added 12 points apiece.

The Vikings led 31-29 on Carrie Van Groll's layup with 15:01 left, but the Foresters countered with a 17-4 run to grab a 46-35 edge with 9:49 left.

Lake Forest led by as many as 13 points before Lawrence started whittling away at the lead. The Vikings went on a 17-8 run, with Stoner scoring seven of those points, to cut the margin to 58-54 with 2:42 left.

The Foresters built the margin back to seven, but the Vikings rallied again and got as close as three points on Reiland's jumper to make it 62-59 with 1:03 remaining. Lake Forest would then hit 3 of 6 free throws, and Lawrence missed its final two shots from the floor.

The Vikings travel to Monmouth on Saturday to complete the weekend road trip.
