APPLETON, Wis. -- A critical 8-0 run late in the game lifted the Grinnell College women's basketball team to a 78-72 Midwest Conference victory Saturday over Lawrence University.
Caresse Reiland scored 19 points to lead Lawrence (4-11, 1-7 MWC) and all scorers. Carrie Van Groll added 14 points, Kelly Mulcahy had 12, and Laura Aerts had 10.
Hannah Wolf paced Grinnell (5-10, 3-5) with 16 points.
After the 10th tie of the game at 63-63, Reiland's jumper gave Lawrence a 65-63 lead with 3:07 remaining. Mallory Scharf answered for Grinnell, as she hit a 3-pointer to give the Pioneers at 66-65 led with 2:56 left.
Following a Lawrence miss, Jodi Watkins hit a 3-pointer, and Miki Nakamura followed with a jumper after a Lawrence turnover to put Grinnell up 71-65. Van Groll stemmed the tide for Lawrence with a jumper with 1:31 left to cut the margin to 71-67, but that's as close as the Vikings would get.
Grinnell hit six consecutive free throws in the final 1:08 to seal the victory.
Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to St. Norbert College.
