WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Carroll College women's basketball team held off a determined Lawrence University squad on Saturday at Van Male Fieldhouse to post a 62-53 Midwest Conference win.
Lawrence finishes the season with a 4-19 record, including a 1-15 mark in league play. Carroll (19-4, 13-3) will play in next weekend's four-team MWC Tournament.
Caresse Reiland scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds for the Vikings. Jenny Stoner paced Lawrence with 14 points in her final college game. Carrie Van Groll, also playing in her final game, added 12 points for Lawrence and finished her career 10th on the school's career scoring list with 868 points.
Crystal Hoewisch led Carroll with 17 points, and Leah Lemke added 11.
Lawrence went on a 10-1 run in the first half, with Reiland scoring six points in that stretch, to give the Vikings a 22-13 edge with 7:17 left. The Pioneers battled back and trailed only 29-28 at the half.
Carroll slowly built a nine-point lead at 53-44 with 4:54 left in the game. Lawrence managed to cut the lead to five points twice, the last time on a pair of Laura Aerts free throws with 52 seconds left. That was as close as Lawrence would get, as Carroll made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 51 seconds to seal the win.
