The Series

In a series that goes back to 1990, Lawrence holds a 20-12 lead. Carroll has won the last four meetings, and Lawrence won four straight prior to that.

Last Meeting

Carroll built a double-digit lead late in the first half and went on to a 54-43 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence at Alexander Gymnasium on Feb. 2.
Caresse Reiland led Lawrence with 12 points and eight rebounds. Crystal Hoewisch led Carrol and all scorers with 19 points and was one of three Pioneers in double figures.
The Vikings trailed by only seven points after a pair of Carrie Van Groll free throws with 4:39 left in the first half, but the Pioneers went on 9-3 run to close the first half. Lyndsey Seewald started the outburst with a 3-pointer and Hoewisch added a pair of layups to key the Pioneers.
The Pioneers then opened the second half with six consecutive points by Kim Wickert, who finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, to build a 38-19 lead. The Pioneers would later match that 19-point advantage as their biggest of the game.
Lawrence trimmed the 19-point lead to 11 with consecutive baskets by Reiland, Jenny Stoner, Sarah Ehlinger, and Margaret Rhatican. Rhatican's fastbreak layup trimmed the lead to 46-35 with 3:57 left, but the Vikings could get no closer than 11 points.

Last Game

St. Norbert scored the first 11 points of the game and went on to post a 68-52 Midwest Conference victory at Lawrence on Wednesday.
Lawrence senior Carrie Van Groll, playing in her last home game, scored 17 points to pace the Vikings. Rachel Hermus paced first-place St. Norbert with 19 points, and Morgan Strasser added 12. Joining Van Groll in their final home game were seniors Jenny Stoner, Stephanie Kramer, and Kelly Mulcahy, who didn't play due to injury.
St. Norbert jumped out to an 11-0 edge in the first 4:44, and Lawrence finally got on the board with Caresse Reiland's layup with 14:56 left in the first half. That was the last time St. Norbert's lead would be in single digits.
The Green Knights led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but Lawrence cut the lead to 11 four different times in the first half and trailed 39-24 at the break. Lawrence opened the second half with an 8-2 run, with Laura Aerts scoring four points, to cut the lead to 43-32 with 17:30 left. The Green Knights responded by scoring the game's next six points, and Lawrence never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Vikings Update

The Vikings wrap up their season Saturday at Carroll. It marks the first time since 2004 that Lawrence will not play in the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Senior guard Carrie Van Groll needs 10 points to break into the top 10 of the school's career scoring list. Van Groll has 856 points, 10 shy of Dara Rakun, who played from 1998-2002 and is at 866.

Sophomore forward Caresse Reiland is having one of the finest all-around seasons in Lawrence history. She is averaging 15.3 points per game, which would tie her with Molly Lieberman for fifth place on the season list. She also has 209 rebounds and needs 10 more to tie Robin Chapman for the fifth-highest season total. Reiland also has 56 blocks, which is the highest season total in school history. Quinn Bohman ranks second with 43.

Pioneers Update

Carroll rebounded from a 73-70 loss at St. Norbert with a 65-40 victory at Ripon on Wednesday. The Pioneers have now won nine of their last 10.

The Pioneers have qualified for the Midwest Conference Tournament, which determines the league champion and the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Tournament. Carroll will play Lake Forest in the semifinals on Feb. 29 at St. Norbert. Beloit is the fourth seed and will face the Green Knights.

Senior All-America guard Crystal Hoewisch leads her team in three categories. She is tops in scoring at 19.2 points per game and paces the squad in assists (3.1 per game) and steals (2.4 per game). Senior center Kim Wickert is second in scoring at 13.1 and is tops in rebounding at 7.4 per game.
