Lawrence University

Program Highlights

We pride ourselves on centering the practices around the needs of each student-athlete.  We are flexible to fit the student's schedule and build the practices individually around each athlete.   We incorporate an optional two-a-day practice format, from which the student-athlete can choose from a minimum of five to a maximum of ten practices per week. The average practice yardage is approximately 6000 to 7000 yards per practice.  Practice yardage will vary depending upon the objective to be accomplished and the specialty group targeted.   Practice yardage is quality-based, not quantity-driven.  We work very carefully with past injuries to get optimal results from our swimmers.  Specialized water training, including underwater videotape analysis, Power Rack¨ tethered and sprint-assisted swimming, and extensive stroke work and drills are highlights of our training. A full dryland program is available, including weight training, medicine balls, stretch cords, and shoulder injury prevention programs. Other training incorporated includes mental training, goal setting, nutritional guidance, and an off-season water polo and crew program.   Sports medicine, featuring specialized injury prevention and care by team physician Chuck McKee (a 1967 Lawrence graduate and All-American athlete) and NATA-certified athletic trainers Erin Buenzli and Jay Davide. The Lawrence athletic training program has a very complete facility to deal with all types of injuries at Alexander Gym.

Financial Aid

Like all NCAA Division III institutions, Lawrence does not grant athletic scholarships. It does, however, administer more than $14 million in grant, work- study, and loan programs equally to athletes as well as non-athletes.

Consistently recognized as a "Best Value" among national liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report, Lawrence guarantees to meet 100% of your demonstrated institutional financial need.  In fact, more than 80% of Lawrence students receive need-based and/or merit-based financial assistance.  In 2003-2004, the average need-based freshman financial aid package exceeded $21,100.

Lawrence adheres to a need-blind admission policy, which means that you will be considered for admission to Lawrence on the merits of your abilities and accomplishments, not on your family's financial situation.

Competitive Schedule

The swimming and diving season officially starts October 18 and runs through the conference championships held in mid-February.  Those who qualify for NCAA Division III Championships will continue on until mid-March.  The Lawrence University Vikings belong to the Midwest Conference (MWC), a NCAA Division III afilliate along with Beloit College, Carroll College, Ripon College and St. Norbert College all from Wisconsin; Knox College, Lake Forest College and Monmouth College all from Illinois and Grinnell College from Iowa.   The schedule consists primarily of dual and one-day invitational meets.   In addition to meets against MWC schools , the Vikings compete against Carthage College, Marquette University, and some of the Wisconsin State Universities such as UW- La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Whitewater. Highlighting the season each year is our own Gene Davis Invite (early Dec.), OUr winter brreak trip meet in Florida, the annual Wisconsin Private Colleges Championship (late Jan.) and the Midwest Conference Championships (mid-Feb).
