Kurt "Coach" Kirner started his career at Lawrence in 1991 after an extensive and successful age-group coaching career that began in 1975. He has worked with several high school All-Americans and age group Top 16 swimmers. Prior to coming to Lawrence, Coach Kirner was enrolled in the PhD. program in Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. He has published several articles in such journals as Swimming Technique and the Journal of Swimming Research. Over the past three seasons, Coach Kirner's mens amd womens team have placed no lower than 3rd in the Midwest Conference Championships over the past ten seasons.  Last season both squads finished as runners-up to the conference title.  Additionally, each team has won the Wisconsin Private Colleges State Championships in eight of the last ten seasons.  He has had 91 All Conference (first place) performers, over 100 Academic All-Conference student-athletes, 6 MWC Swimmer of the year recipients, 6 All-American performances, 2 Academic All- American honorees and 1 NCAA post graduate scholars. "One of Lawrence's finest points is its attitude of balancing both academics and athletics," says Kirner. "Very few schools can boast the quality of education we have and still offer a challenging, fun, and very successful athletic program. Lawrence feels athletics are actually an important part of a student's overall academic experience. This philosophy is reflected in all the outstanding athletic facilities on campus."
