Lawrence sweeps Pioneers in season finale

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team wrapped up its season on a high note by sweeping a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Carroll University on Wednesday at Whiting Field.

The Vikings won the opener 7-3 and then rallied for a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.

Lawrence's Carli Gurholt went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, belted a pair of homers, and drove in seven runs. Gurholt finished the season with 45 runs batted in, breaking the Lawrence season record of 43 set by Alex Goodson in 2007.

Ellen French went 4-for-4 in the nightcap to tie the Lawrence record for hits in a game, and Goodson blasted a three-run homer in the same game to give the Vikings the lead for good.

Lawrence (10-19, 5-8 MWC) led 2-1 in the opener and upped that lead to 4-1 in the fourth on Katie Simonson's two-run double. Simonson had three hits on the day and drove in a pair of runs.

Carroll (12-14, 4-9) cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but Lawrence answered in the bottom of the sixth. After an infield single and a walk, Gurholt blasted a three-run homer to put Lawrence up 7-3.

Emily Perish worked around two hits in the seventh to seal the victory. Perish went the distance, striking out one and walking one, to pick up her sixth win of the season.

In the nightcap, Gurholt gave Lawrence an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Gurholt finished the season with 12 homers, smashing the Lawrence season record of seven. Gurholt already has 15 for her career, breaking the career record of 11 held by Lawrence Hall of Famer Tracie Spangenberg.

Carroll came back and scored four times in the top of the second, but the Vikings battled back. Lawrence trailed 5-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth when the Vikings scored four times.

After a pair of walks to start the inning, Goodson smashed a three-run homer to center to give Lawrence a 6-5 lead. French followed with a single, and Hillary Cheever doubled to score French and put Lawrence up 7-5.

Carroll cut the lead to 7-6 with a run in the top of the sixth, but Lawrence added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. Simonson reached on a fielder's choice and Goodson doubled to put runners at second and third. French then singled up the middle to score both and give Lawrence a 9-6 edge.

Perish then worked around a single in the top of the seventh to pick up her first career save. Meredith Foshag worked the first five innings, striking out three and walking one, to earn the victory.

Kelsey Deakins took the loss in both games for Carroll.
