Goodson breaks home run record as Lawrence sweeps Bucs

BELOIT, Wis. -- Alex Goodson hit her school-record seventh home run this season, as the Lawrence University softball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Beloit College on Saturday by the scores of 13-2 and 3-0.

Goodon hit a solo homer in the sixth inning of the second game to break the record she held with Tracie Spangenberg. Goodson, a freshman from Plainfield, Ill., also has a school-record 42 runs batted in on the season.

Catherine Marinac got both wins on the day and her second shutout of the season to improve to 13-7. She struck out six and walked five on the afternoon.

In the opener, Lawrence (15-8, 6-5 MWC) collected 12 hits in the game and jumped on Beloit (9-17, 4-7) starter Katy Nilson for five runs in the first inning. Goodson had a run-scoring double in the first inning, and Megan Butterbrodt later delivered a three-run triple in the frame.

The Vikings added two more in second, as both runs scored when shortstop Lauren Rybka misplayed Goodson's ground ball.

Lawrence added another run in the fourth and put the game away with five runs in the seventh. Carrie Van Groll, who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored in the opener, picked up a two-run single in the seventh for the Vikings.

Marinac scattered five hits to earn the shutout in the nightcap. The Vikings staked her to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Van Groll singled and later scored on an error by rightfielder Missy Pieters.

Lawrence made it 2-0 in the fourth when the Vikings manufactured a run. Goodson was hit by a pitch, went to second on a walk and third on a wild pitch. She then scored on Justine Garbarski's groundout.

Goodon then belted her record-breaking homer to lead off the sixth inning to complete the scoring.

Lawrence is back in action Sunday when it travels to the University of Chicago. The Vikings host St. Norbert in a critical conference doubleheader Tuesday at Whiting Field.
