RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team lost both games of a Midwest Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Ripon College, including a heartbreaker in the opener.
Ripon hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 2-1 and then posted a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
Lawrence (13-8, 4-5 MWC) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the first game. Jenna Reichel led off the game with an infield single and went to second on an error by the shortstop. After moving to third on a wild pitch, she scored on Alex Goodson's ground out.
Ripon (13-11, 6-3) started the winning rally when Bethany Mehlberg reached on an error to open the seventh. After a fielder's choice and a strikeout, lead-off hitter Natalie Geenan hit the first offering from Catherine Marinac for a two-run homer to win it.
In the nightcap, Lawrence took a 2-1 lead in the first on Goodson's two-run single. Ripon tied the game in the second and took the lead for good with two runs in the third, courtesy of Jackie Reichart's two-run single.
Ripon, who was the visitor in the nightcap, then sealed the win with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Lawrence returns to action Saturday when it travels to Beloit College for a league twinbill.
