Vikings take two from Carroll

APPLETON, Wis. -- Alex Goodson belted her fifth homer of the season and collected six hits on the day, as the Lawrence University softball team downed Carroll College 14-1 and 11-7 in a Midwest Conference doubleheader Saturday at Whiting Field.

Goodson went 2-for-4 in the opener and was 4-for-5 in the nightcap and is now hitting .414 on the season. With Goodson powering the offense, Catherine Marinac provided the pitching. She pitched both games and struck out nine and didn't walk a batter on the afternoon.

In the opener, Lawrence (11-6, 4-3 MWC) broke the game open with five runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. Jenna Reichel and Carrie Van Groll both had run-scoring singles in the inning, and Goodson belted a two-run double.

Lawrence put the game away with seven runs in the fourth inning. Lawrence had six hits in the inning, including Amanda Hauser's two-run double and run scoring singles from Justine Garbarski and Tammi Weiss.

Marinac allowed three hits in the five-inning contest, striking out a pair. Kelsey Deakins allowed 12 hits over four innings of work and took the loss.

Carroll (4-19, 0-9) grabbed a 6-1 lead after scoring six times in the second, with the big blow coming on Amanda Schrimsher's three-run double.

Lawrence cut the lead to 6-3 with single runs in the third and fourth and then took the lead with six runs in the fifth. Lawrence had only three hits in the inning, and the Pioneers hurt themselves with three errors. Van Groll's two-run single tied the game at 6-6, and Goodson later tripled to drive in Toren Johnson for an 8-6 Lawrence lead. Hauser then singled to score Goodson and give Lawrence a 9-6 edge.

Goodson finished the scoring for the Vikings when she belted a two-run homer for Lawrence, which was the visiting team in the nightcap, in the top of the seventh.

Marinac, who improved to 9-5 on the season, allowed 14 hits in the nightcap and struck out seven.

Lawrence is back in action at Whiting Field on Sunday when the Vikings host Finlandia University in a nonconference doubleheader at noon.
