DE PERE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team rallied twice in the opener, but St. Norbert College hung on for a 4-3 victory and the Green Knights then won 9-2 in the nightcap of a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Mel Nicks Field.
Lawrence (5-12, 1-3 MWC) trailed 2-0 after the first inning of the opener but cut the lead in half in the fifth on Alex Goodson's run-scoring double. The Vikings then tied it in the sixth on Hillary Cheever's first career homer.
St. Norbert (11-8, 4-0 MWC) got the lead back in the sixth when a throwing error with two outs allowed a run to score. The Vikings battled back in the top of the seventh to tie the game. After Carrie Van Groll and Megan Butterbrodt singled, Amanda Hauser ripped a double down the right-field line to score Van Groll and tie the game.
The Green Knights then scored an unlikely run to win it in the bottom of the seventh. A catcher's interference call allowed lead-off batter Julie Hayes to reach. A sacrfice bunt moved her to second, and Tracy Palmer's bloop single scored the winning run.
Catherine Marinac took the loss despite allowing only seven hits, striking out two and not walking a batter. Mara Resch got the win but gave up 11 hits in seven innings.
Lawrence led 1-0 in the nightcap when Hauser doubled to score Goodson. That lead would hold up until the fifth.
The Green Knights scored five times in the fifth against Lawrence starter Meredith Foshag. The big blow was Lindsey Reynolds' two-run single.
St. Norbert added four more runs in the sixth to seal the victory.
Kayla Krueger went the distance, allowing eight hits, to get the win.
